Picture postcard perfect, with classic white sandy beaches, surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs and sunlit crystal water, Phi Phi actually consists of two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley, so gorgeous it was used as a location for the Hollywood film, "The Beach."
The Phi Phi Islands are part of National Park situated at the extreme souht of the hill chain of Phang Gha Bay, at 34 km souht-west from Phuket island.
Boht islands are more than beautiful wiht green hills. One of this hills reach 498 m above a strip of white sand beaches. From the the sky the whole looks like a giant bar-bell. The tour around Phi Phi Don, the biggest of the two islands, is only 20 km.
The beauty reputation is thanks to the 9 fantastic lagoons wiht fine white sand, the magnificent coral banks and the crytal clear water.
The small number of inhabitants live in a fisherman village hidden behind the growing number of hotels, The smaller Phi Phi Ley is only a giant peace of rocks honeycombed wiht grottos and wiht a canyon in the form of a bowl, feed by thewater coming from the vertical rock formations. No one is living this island, but it has some wonderful isolated beaches.
What to Do
As well as perfect beaches, the islands also offer excellent snorkelling, great diving, challenging game fishing and lots of activities like rock climbing, kayaking and local boat trips. There's no shortage of restaurants either. Sample some local Thai food on the beach with the sand between your toes, or enjoy a steak under a starry sky. Nightlife is fairly simple, but for the size of Phi Phi Don, is considerable with music bars and local hotspots.
Phuket is the only island of Thailand that possesses provincial status. There are three districts allocated in this province, Thalang, Kathu and Muang. Thalang District is located in the northern part of the island while Kathu and Muang are in the west and south accordingly.
